Frequently Asked Questions

'Will the beads settle after a while?'
No, the beads are held together with glue and form a solid structure. Click here to see the structure.

'I've read somewhere that you need ventilation in the cavity. How is this possible when you fill it.
Polypearl beads are round and when packed together, air can still circulate around them. Take a look at ventilation. Polypearl complies with the Irish Agrement board standards.

'Will water not run through the cavity along the Polypearl.
Again, the structure of polypearl means that water will not penetrate to the cavity. Take a look at Water Drainage. Polypearl complies with the Irish Agrement board standards.

'What is the u-Value of Polypearl'
0.30 m/k2 for a standard 100 mm cavity.

'Are Polypearl Irish Agrement Board approved?'
Yes, Polypearl meets with Irish Agrement Board Standards for insulation. In fact, we are the only approved installers of bonded bead in the Republic of Ireland. Our certificate number is 00/0111. Click here to request a copy of the certificate or download it by clickng here.

'How do you know when the cavity is full?'
The bead is injected at the top of the cavity under high pressure. Through gravity and this pressure the bead naturally flows to the bottom of the cavity and continues to fill upwards. The beads will continue to fill any available space. When the cavity is full pressure builds internally and back pressure automatically stops the injection gun. (Just like when you're filling petrol)

'How many holes do you drill?'
In a typical bungalow gable end we would drill approximately 10-12 holes at ceiling level. For existing dwellings, the holes are filled with cement mixed carefully with coloured sand to match as closely as possible to the existing mortar, which soon becomes indistinguishable from the original. For new buildings these small holes will be covered completely covered by plasterwork leaving no trace of work done.

'At what stage should Polypearl be installed?'
In a new house, Polypearl should be installed after doors and windows are fitted and the roof complete. In existing houses built pre-1980 with cavity walls, it should be installed immediately. For more information see Installation.
